Sawn Douglas Fir Timber:

Douglas Fir sawn timber is used for many applications including heavy construction, the building of houses, roof trusses and all kinds of interior and exterior joinery.

We are often asked ‘How strong and durable is Douglas Fir wood?’ well, Douglas Fir, sawn timber, is a strong and moderately durable timber, if treated it can last for hundreds of years.

Douglas Fir is more difficult to work and machine than imported timbers due to the greater number of hard knots in the heartwood, which can be troublesome.

Care must therefore be taken in finishing Douglas Fir, but good results can be obtained. It can be glued satisfactorily, and although tending to split, can be nailed, and screwed.

Douglas fir is a good timber for those who require a strong durable hardwood for external joinery applications. All our Douglas Fir timber is roughly sawn and cut to the size of your choice and delivered to both commercial and domestic properties in the UK.

Properties:
Douglas Fir has high crushing and stiffness strength. Medium resistance to shock loads. It works very well with hand and machine tools but does have a blunting effect on cutters. It planes, nails, screws, turns and glues very well. It has poor painting and varnishing qualities but stains adequately.
