Sawn Sapele Timber:
Sapele timber is characterised by a marked and regular stripe, particularly pronounced on quarter-sawn surfaces. Occasionally mottle figure is present, it is fairly close textured, and the grain is interlocked. It is harder and heavier than African mahogany.
Sapele darkens over time. It goes to a rich brown with much less red in it than mahogany or American Cherry timber.
Stress factures' can be present in sawn Sapele timber, but a nice timber to work which most wood workers would agree.
Sapele timber has become one of the most popular wood types for exterior doors.
If you are looking for the best timber for flooring then Sapele could be the perfect timber, as it has a wonderful dark rich colour with a wide accentuated grain.
Sapele, also known as Sapele Mahogany, is also an incredible wood option for cutting boards.
Sapele is a good performer for external joinery and is relatively stable in service, needs to be painted or stained.

Sapele has medium resistance to shock loads, medium bending strength, high crushing strength, low stiffness and poor steam-bending properties. It works well with both hand and machine tools, with a tolerable blunting effect on cutting edges. Sapele planes and moulds easily. It drills, routers, carves, nails, screws, stains, varnishes and paints well. Sapele glues fairly well. It sands very well and can be brought to an excellent polished finish.
